Monitoring the Status of Daily Backups for all accounts

<!—[if !supportEmptyParas]—>

On a daily basis, Monday through Friday, a member of the Hudson Tech Support Staff needs to login to the Safety Net System and confirm that backups are being completed in a timely manner.

When the SafetyNet system is installed on a client server, one of two different packages are installed, depending upon the size of the data to be backed up nightly.

<!—[if !supportEmptyParas]—>

Clients with smaller databases are backed up to a 4 GB program

Clients with larger databases are backed up to a 10 GB program.

<!—[if !supportEmptyParas]—>

The size here refers to the total amount of storage which a single client may backup to the mirrored servers in a 10 day period. The mirrored servers maintain a rotating 10 day history for each account. On day 11, the first days history is deleted and replaced with the most current data. This effectively means that a client could choose a restore date up to 10 days in the past. Data older than this is discarded and cannot be retrieved via the SafetyNet system.

To check account information or backup history online, connect to the connected.com support center at the following URL:

https://supportcenterab.connected.com/supportcenter/login.asp

At the Login Window Enter the following

10 GB System:  Technician ID:         *****  Password:   *****

<!—[if !supportEmptyParas]—> <!—[endif]—>

4 GB System:  Technician ID:        *****   Password:         *****

(**For login ID’s and Passwords, contact the head of Hudson Tech Support.)

Once logged into the support center:

Click on the + symbol next to Reports to see reports already run for the day, week, month.

Double click on any report to open and view the data.

To Create a Daily Tracking Report for a single Day:

  1. Click     on the + symbol to the left of Report Templates
  2. Select     the Report Template “ Daily Tracking”
  3. Enter     a name in the Report Output Name Field. I suggest “050906” for yymmdd (Sept 6, 2005). This will create a list of chronologically     sorted reports.
  4. Leave     the “Include Sub-Communities” box checked
  5. In the     “Report Start Date” and “Report End Date” fields, enter the date for which     the report is being run. All accounts are set to backup sometime just     before or after midnight, so If today is Tuesday the 6th,     all of the backups of Mondays data would have occurred earlier this     morning (on the 6th). Therefore the date I will enter in both     boxes is the same:

Daily Tracking 050906

Start Date: 9/6/2005

End Date: 6/6/2005

  1. Select     the “Run Report” Button.
  2. The     Report Queue window will indicate that the report has been scheduled to     run. Depending on the time of day when the report was requested, it can     take from 1 minute to 20 minutes for the report to be generated.
  3. To     view your new report, select the +     symbol to the left of “Reports” in the left most frame. When available for viewing, your report     will be listed here.

From each report, make note of any accounts that are missing from the backup list and any account whose file transfer size is less than (or about) 1 MB. These are accounts that either failed to backup, or had an imcomplete backup. (Accounts with only a couple MB backup size are most likely missing the Res2SQL database file. The ResFC and other config files were probably uploaded successfully though).

When finished viewing the backup history on one of the backup servers, select LOGOUT from the top toll bar. You will be returned to the Support Center login screen. Change the Technician ID to that of the second server, along with the proper password, and repeat the process for the second server.

Reports may be saved for several days, weeks or up to a month. I usually keep reports for 30 days so that I can quickly compare backup sizes for various accounts over the last 30 days. To delete a report, you login as per above, click the report you wish to delete, and then press the delete key on your keyboard. When planning to delete reports, using Internet Explorer is best. If using Mozilla or Opera, reports can be deleted, but you must click the report and instantaneously press the delete key (Mozilla), or press and hold the left mouse button on the report to be deleted and then press the delete key (Opera).
