Adding Barcode Tokens to a Template

Adding barcoding to Reservation Detail or Trip sheets can greatly speed the back end processing of paperwork resulting in significant time savings. Barcoding may also be added to web tickets, voucher templates, etc. The uses of barcoding in the hudson system are many and varied.

To use or enable Barcoding requires the following:

  1. Installation of a barcode font on your local system
  2. Purchase of a barcode scanner or wand.
  3. Creation of custom templates, utilizing ResID or WResID tokens
  4. Installation and Configuration of Bar Code scanners

Installation of Bar Code font:

The printing of barcodes on documents or paperwork is a simple matter of using a special barcode font in your documents or on your HWeb template.  You can download the necessary font, and also purchase barcode scanners, label printers and other devices from www.idautomation.com. One of the best and easiest fonts to use is IDA Code 39 HR Short.  The Code 39 font is an alpha-numeric barcode, also known as the 3 of 9 code or LOGMARS code.

Purchase of Barcode scanner or wand

There are many different types of barcode scanning devices available. Which type is most appropriate for you will depend upon your intended use. There are many sources for barcode scanners on the Internet, and pricing for these devices varies greatly. Feel free to consult with Hudson Tech Support before purchasing for a recommendation.  If you are unable to determine which is best suited to your needs a good generic and reliable device is the IDAutomation USB Barcode Scanner with DataBar.  This is a good quality hand held laser scanner which can be pedestal mounted for fixed use as well.  More information can be found at: http://www.idautomation.com/scanners/usb-barcode-scanner.html

Creation of Custom Templates

Prior to placing barcodes on a document, you should familiarize yourself with the use of Tokens, and creation of custom templates in HWeb applications.

To print a normal ResID as barcode you need to add seven 0’s and a 0 or a 2 at the end to specify primary(0) or secondary(2) reservation.  The length of the barcode must be 8 digits. The entire barcode number must start and end with an exclamation character (!)  or the asterisk (*) for the barcode to scan properly.

Examples:
!00000000!  (primary - First Leg)

*00000002*  (secondary - Second Leg/Return)

——————

To print the WResID as a barcode on a template you need to add ten A’s and a 0 or a 2 at the end to specify primary(0) or secondary(2).  The length of the bar code must be 11 digits. The entire barcode number must start and end with an exclamation character (!)  or the asterisk (*) for the barcode to scan properly.

Examples:
*AAAAAAAAAA0 * (primary - First Leg)

!AAAAAAAAAA2 !  (secondary - Second Leg/Return)

After adding the numbers in the sequence and format listed above, you then highlight the text with your text editor and change the font of the selected text to ID Code 39 HR Short. When you apply the font formatting change, the ID number should now be displayed along with the barcoding directly above it.

Installation / Configuration of Barcode Scanner

Intallation of the barcode scanner can be done by you once it is obtained, by following the installation instructions that accompany the scanner. To be able to use the scanner with HWeb applications, your software will need to be updated and configured by Hudson TechSupport.  You should consider contacting Hudson before you proceed with the scanner purchase to ensure that your intended use of barcoding can be properly configured within the HWeb system.
